The
NICD Library came into being in 1909 along with
the establishment of the Central Malaria Bureau
at Kasauli (Himachal Pradesh) and since then the
library facilities continued to expand with the
increased activities and the renaming as Malaria
Institute of India. The expansion received a
fillip in 1963, when the activities of Malaria
Institute of India were expanded and reorganised
and it was renamed as NICD.
NICD is
the only library in the country which has got
enormous early literature in the fields of
Malaria and other vector borne diseases
prevalent in the country. It has a collection of
rare books, manuscripts, original reports and
control aspects of these diseases. The library
is having up to date literature on all the
vector-borne diseases, communicable diseases and
related aspects viz. Bacteriology, Parasitology,
Microbiology, Infectious Diseases, Mycology,
Biochemistry, Immunology etc. A total of 124
(Journal 107 Foreign and 17 National) are being
subscribed. In addition about 100 journals are
being received on exchange or on complimentary
basis.
The
library has a total of 32,000 books and bound
journals, 251 maps, 89 photocopies on various
subject and about 1400 Annual Reports from
various organisations.
Some of
the important indexing and abstracting journals
available in the library are Tropical Diseases
Bulletin, Abstracts on Hygiene, Excerpta Medica
(Immunology and Microbiology). Biological
Abstracts, (upto 1986), Index
Medicus, (Monthly) and Helminthology Abstracts
etc.
The
library maintains adequate stocks of reprints of
a large number of papers and articles published
in Indian Journal of Malariology and Journal of
Communicable Diseases for supply to research
workers in the country and abroad and
participants to different courses at NICD.
Similarly, the library also obtains reprints or
research papers for research workers of this
Institute.
Besides, the library provides the
following services to the readers and scientific
workers:-
Bibliographies
The
library regularly provides literature on various
subjects of topical interest to the research
workers and particulars attending various
courses at the Institute.
Liaison With Other
Libraries
The
library maintains liaison with scientific and
Medical libraries in the country for
inter-library loan facilities to meet the demand
of the research workers and the participants
attending various courses at this Institute. The
library also gives books and journals to other
Libraries on Inter Library Loan.
Quarterly Addition
Lists
The
library circulars a list of new books received
every quarter to aquatint the readers.
Photocopying
Services
The
library is providing photocopying services to
their readers and the workers on request.
New Paper Clipping
The
library publishes Health News Clippings, a
monthly compilation of news items on various
topics from several leading Hindi & English
Newspapers in India. The topics are arranged
subject-wise, and a suitable subject heading is
assigned to each item.
Membership
The
membership is restricted only to NICD and NMEP
workers and also participants to various
courses. The outsiders are allowed only for consultation.
