Surveillance of diseases is the continuing scrutiny of all aspects
of the occurence and spread of a disease that are pertinent to effective control.
Communicable disesase constitute a significant disease burden and are major causes of morbidity,
mortality and long-term severe mental and physical disabilities.
National Surveillance Programme for Communicable diseases has been launched to
strengthen the disease surveillance system so that early warning signals are
recognised and appropriate timely follow-up action is initiated. The main objective of the programme is
capacity building at district and state levels.
