Visitors during the year Historic visit of Dr. Donna E. Shalala, Secretary
(Health), USA to NICD, Delhi Dr.
Donna E. Shalala, Secretary, Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS),
Government of the United States of America visited the National Institute of
Communicable Diseases on 29 November 1997. Dr. Donna Shalala addressed the
senior faculty of the Institute, NMEP and senior officers of the Directorate
General of Health Services. She said that the fight against communicable
diseases was in the interest of all countries. She highlighted the Indo-US
Statemnt signed by her and Shrimati Renuka Chowdhury, Minister of State for
Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of India. Speaking on the occasion, 
Dr.
S.P. Agarwal, Director General of Health Services informed her of the
initiatives taken by the Directorate General of Health Services and the
Department of Health to strengthen the disease surveillance system in the
country. Shrimati Shailaja Chandra, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Health
and Family Welfare thanked the Secretary, Department of Health and Human
Services for the positive support and assured her of the priority accorded by
the Government of India for disease surveillance system. Dr.
Shalala visited various laboratories of NICD and met the members of the faculty
and staff of the Institute. Important
