1. Introduction
The
National Institute of Communicable Disease (NICD) was established on July 30,
1963, subsequent to the decision of the Government of India to expand and
reorganise the activities of the Malaria Institute of India (MII), which
remained in existence under different names since its inception in 1909. The
reorganised Institute was established to develop a national centre for teaching
and research in various disciplines of epidemiology and control of communicable
diseases. The Institute was also entrusted the task of developing reliable and
economic laboratory tools which could be effectively applied in the field for
the control of communicable diseases.
Organisation
The
Institute is under the administrative control of the Directorate General of
Health Services, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.
The Director is the administrative and technical head of the Institute. There
are eight Divisions at the Headquarters of the Institute, namely AIDS &
HIV, Biochemistry & Biotechnology, Epidemiology, Helminthology, Medical Entomology
& Vector Control, Microbiology, Training & Malariology and Zoonosis. In
each division there are several sections engaged in particular type of research
work. The activities of each division is supervised by a Divisional Head.
Additionally, there are eight out-station branches located at Calcut (Kerala),
Rajahmundry (Andhra Pradesh), Varanasi (U.P.), Coonoor (Tamil Nadu), Alwar
(Rajasthan), Bangalore (Karnataka), Patna (Bihar and Jagdalpur (Madhya
Pradesh).
In
addition to the aforementioned scientific and technical divisions, the
Institute has an extensive administrative support set-up alongwith a
full-fledged Central Animal House facility, Central Library and Fish
Hatcheries.
